Wright Morris, “Outhouse, Nebraska”, 1947

Wright Morris is a really good photographer who seems to have been left off of the greatest hits lists.  Here is what I like about this.  It’s funny, a landscape in which an outhouse is the central feature.  It looks like all of the FSA (Farm Security Administration 1935–44) Walker Evans Great Plains falling into the shit hole of life photographs from between the wars.  It’s theatrical.  Morris has found a proscenium arch to frame his rickety wooden shack.  There even appears to be a scrim of some sort further making this a reveal.  The land is flat; the privy is dark.  The shadows in the foreground do not belong to the photographer but rather some amorphous something.  The pole in the distance on the right isn’t plumb and  brings my eye right into the photo.

Nothing is perfect.  Welcome to America.
