You never know when a photograph will suddenly deliver itself in front of you and leave you completely gobsmacked.  It took me some time to sort out what is happening in this picture which presents itself initially as color abstraction.  It looks like a water color of colors.  Then you see the intrusive barrel of an artillery gun, a howitzer or whatever, and a soldier.  Those details change the impact of the image, perhaps making it even more meaningful because of the disruption and even erotic.    

US Signal Corps, “Untitled” World War II, Italy, 1940s

The wall text reads: “Grenades of colored smoke,  These were used according to established codes that varied depending on the colour, and helped the Air Force to locate the position and needs of troops on the ground.”  No artist is credited, it is simply part of the archive of the US Signal Corps.  

Strange beauty indeed.
