Name a funny photograph.

Hmm.

Nothing?

Try to think of one without a dog or a sign.  That’s even harder.

Joel-Peter Witkin, the artist, likes a joke about two cannibals eating a clown.  One turns to the other and says “Does this taste funny to you?”

Susan Lipper, “Lucky”, from “trip” (1993-1995)

I’m struck by how little humor there is in photography with the exception of pictures of dogs and/or signs.  Susan Lipper’s “Lucky” flirts with that idea.

If you don’t agree, try to think of one.  OK, Henri Carrtier-Bresson and Elliott Erwitt can be funny, especially when they throw things off balance.

Good luck especially when you start to wonder if “Lucky” was a set up.
