Simon Norfolk, “Aluminium waste pond at Petkovic (Bosnia) from “Et in Arcadia Ego,” 2005

“The sight of a battlefield after the fight is enough to inspire princes with a love of peace and horror of war.”

-Napoleon Bonaparte *1

This photograph does not literally depict the bloody aftermath of a battle fought on a wintry plain.  Given the location that might be a viewer’s first reaction.  However, the red waste pond is close to a factory which was the site of a mass execution of Bosnian Muslim boys and men on 14 July 1995.

It might as well be human blood.

My artworks are philosophical metaphors for the foolishness of pride, of awe and, most importantly, the vanity of the Empire.”*2  Simon Norfolk is man of intelligence and outrage intent on capturing man’s horrendous behavior on earth — in photographs.  This may also be Norfolk’s heart breaking, the paradox finding beauty in horror.

It is like a slash across a pale naked chest.  It’s shocking.  The sad report is that it doesn’t cross the line to changing people’s behavior, our collective complacency.

It doesn’t ever end.
