Simen Johan, “White Light”, 2015

Simen Johan’s photographic world is a construct. He builds things up pixel by pixel. It is impossible to know where he starts — ok, with the idea — but then what? He likes animals in unlikely, amazingly lush environments. “What I am trying to capture is this sense I have about pure being. The only thing permanent in the world is pure being, something that never changes”.*1

He has two cave-like images, “White Light” and “Dark Light”. In the former above, what might have been an entrance is full pf light, and it’s not clear if we can pass into and through the opening — is there an opening? — it is a phosphorescent cloud of possibility. It’s magnetic, drawing us close. We can see that the light values have been reversed, that this is negative printed positively. Its enormous power all comes in our imagination, a construct too.
