Roberto Fernández Ibáñez, “France poverty population”, 1996-2011

Roberto Fernández Ibáñez is based in Uruguay where he had a career as a chemist.  He works with global issues that are economic and political.  In his series,“Prophetic Landscape” and “Moments of Uncertainty”, he appropriates graphs depicting climate change, the price of gold or population growth over a period of time and the like.  He re-photographs these then manipulates the emulsion to get a result he likes, overlapping layers and finding seeming mountain-scapes in the dark room.  The results are modest, imaginative and sobering, essentially black and white with some tone, distillations of insanity in a sea of contemporary color photographic work.

We are but data, dots in a fictitious landscape not created by Nature but by human mind’s abstraction. …  Mountains and mathematical graphs: landscapes similar in shape, but opposite in essence. Behind the ephemeral financial status of companies or countries and the changes in environmental and social trends, lays the serene presence of perennial, undulated mountains that call me to inner peace and reflection”*1.
