Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Untitled (Boy seated), 1958
This seems like a fine place to end this journey with Ralph Eugene Meatyard, “Untitled (Boy seated)”, 1958. The boy sits cross-legged in Sukshana position. This image has the basics: balance and magic. It as if a young Buddha has found his way the center of the frame, then been thoughtfully lit thoughtfully lit from above and to the right. He’s naked but you don’t notice that because it all so discreet and simple. The light glides along his shoulder from the back of his head down to his knee. It is odd that the boy seems slightly off center. Is this intentional to keep the viewer a little off balance? But the boy does seem to be disappearing into the matrix or vortex or center of something or other. It teases our eye with its perfect proportions, a Michelangelo Vitruvian young man. There is an enigma to his perfect repose, an invitation to you the viewer to join in simultaneous consideration of the great whatever. Meatyard was a wise seer of the world, particularly kids. He could locate and witness their innocence, abandon and secrets.
As I wrote in “The Unseen Eye”, it is a picture of me but also part of a journey of images, “like a dream, from one to the next, from birth to death, pleasure and pain, the everyday and the infinite.”
