Vernacular is a fussy word describing something that isn’t.  I like familiar as in from the family or everyday, even intimate.  Its wonderful that thes unremarkable photographs, seen without any sort of context, behave humorously or demonstrate unintended artfulness.  They’re funny, and, oddly enough, they look well made.

Jennifer Greenburg uses familiar shots of celebratory cake cutting moments in which she has inserted herself into the picture as the bride.  She appears to wear the same bridal gown throughout the series.  Technically they are seamless; one imagines she has even cleaned up the originals.

Jennifer Greenburg, “Eight Brides”, from “Revising History”, 2018

She describes the group as “Revised History”.

It’s possible that she may have given these works longer life because the artist’s versions will find their way to gallery and museum walls and into books.  We will never know that the original brides looked like, just the eight grooms.

The series has a mad, murderous female Blue Beard undercurrent.  Where are the other ladies?  These are funny and touching; they mine our reckoning that this is the quintessentially ridiculous moment at a wedding reception with the couple acting out however they might, a moment of levity in a deeply felt, anxious occasion.  The artist has invested the series with insight and humor.
