Ernest Withers (1922-2007), “I am a Man”, 1968

“I Am A Man” speaks simply and directly. There is a density to the crowd suggesting that we can only begin to recognize the size of the protest taking place. These are Memphis sanitation workers on strike, standing in a street, holding these now iconic "I AM A MAN” sign. The image transcends its news photo origins to become an icon in late twentieth century US history.

The photographer’s role in the Civil Rights Movement was complicated because it was ultimately revealed that he had been an FBI informant during this period. Its a big story.
