Edward Burtynsky, “Recycling #10, Chittagong, Bangladesh”, 2001

This photograph of oil filled footprints is at odds with most of Mr. Burtynsky’s work because he likes size and scale.  If he says he is going to take on “Oil” as a subject he is going to show you oil fields and expressways and mountains of tires.  This image is almost comical in its intimacy and human-ness.  It is so quiet relative to the rest of the work which is epic and daring and full of technical challenge but that makes this an entry point for all of the work.  It also wryly references the shot of the foot print from the first walk on the moon as well early man leaving evidence of himself on the walls of caves.

One simple photograph references the whole history of art.

The image’s impact politically is as sizable.  The artist says “Seeing barefoot workers cleaning up and dealing with our “oil mess” is a reminder that we are all connected, and nothing we do is without a result.”*1
